IT’S PEOPLE, NOT PROGRAMS
Outstanding principals understand that the true essence of a great school lies in its teachers, not merely in its programs or accolades. They recognize that having exceptional teachers directly correlates with the perception of a school's quality. Without great teachers, a school cannot truly excel, regardless of its other achievements or recognitions.
This perspective is shared by all stakeholders, including parents, students, and the broader community. For instance, if my third-grade daughter has an excellent teacher, I hold her school in high regard. The teacher's ability to inspire, engage, and support students creates a positive learning environment that reflects well on the entire institution. Conversely, if her teacher falls short, my view of the school diminishes, regardless of its accolades or student achievements. Awards and high test scores become secondary to the daily experiences and interactions my child has with her teacher.
Similarly, students perceive their school based on the quality of their teachers. A high school sophomore with four outstanding teachers will undoubtedly view the school as exceptional. These teachers not only deliver effective instruction but also foster a sense of belonging and motivation that enhances the student's overall educational experience. However, as the quality of teaching declines, so does the student's opinion. Students are keenly aware of how their teachers affect their learning and engagement, and this directly impacts their perception of the school's value.
From kindergarten through college, the caliber of teachers shapes our perceptions of a school's quality. Effective principals prioritize hiring and supporting great teachers, knowing that they are the cornerstone of a successful educational environment. They invest in professional development, create opportunities for collaboration, and cultivate a culture of excellence that empowers teachers to thrive.
In essence, the success of a school is not measured solely by its programs or accolades, but by the people who bring those programs to life. Great teachers are the heart of a school, influencing not only academic outcomes but also the overall perception of the institution. Principals who focus on nurturing and retaining talented educators are those who ultimately create schools that are truly exceptional.
